Experience & Case Histories

Introduction
25 years of experience in marine electrical engineering has led MEC Managing Director Richard Clark to the conclusion that it is only by offering the widest range of services, and the widest possible range of experience that the client can be fully reassured that MEC can fulfil its promises of service, quality and safety.

All MEC work is undertaken by specialist marine electrical engineers, who are time served and experienced in the realities of work on board ship.

Experience
MEC undertake electrical installations, repairs, refits, faultfinding, inspections, specification and drawing preparation; FAT testing, on site supervision, ship commissioning and trials as well as offering a full project management service.

We have experience with most on board systems and installations, including alarm systems, power management systems and switchboards. As required in this line of work MEC, also has the required background knowledge in other marine disciplines such as hotel services, engines, pumping systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanical drives and boilers. It is the understanding of how these systems relate, that allows us to see how best to interface them with the electrical systems.

Case History 1
MEC have gained considerable experience with complex research and survey vessels, and are familiar with working to high standards to meet client’s requirements.

We were asked by MJR Controls to provide project management services for the installation of a new remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to the telecommunications cable laying and repair vessel M/V Northern River. The job entailed a survey of the installation, preparation of the specifications and the drawing of the plans, as well as the full on-site management of the project. The installation included the ROV, it’s associated winches, control cabin, and generator plant, all electrical load calculations and cable planning.

Case History 2
On the car-carrying vessel M/V Autoline, MEC were asked to upgrade the various alarms and safety systems to bring the vessel up to French flag requirements. This project included liasing with the owner to bring the vessel to required standards, preparation of material requisition lists, preparation of upgrade drawings, and the installation of the equipment, including all testing and validation.

Case History 3
Following an extensive refit MEC were responsible for the commissioning of the car-carrying vessel M/V Autotransporter on behalf of the owner. Marine Electrical Consulting Ltd was called in to pick up the latter end of the refit, mainly the commissioning and testing of the extensively altered systems.

The project involved liaison with manufacturer representatives to ensure the new systems came “on line” in a controlled and documented fashion. Installations were required to meet all classification society and flag states requirements, on generators, switchboard, generator automation, main engine control, alarm systems, pump automation, tank sounding systems, control consoles, fuel oil and lubricating oil purification, lighting and hotel services.
